Anomous Public Shrines.

Don't know if I spelled anonamous right but hopefully
it won't prejudice ya'll.

I have had an idea for a while to create small and not so small
public shrines/alters/public art things.
I'm in New Jersey; split my time between New Brunswick and Perth Amboy.

Most of what I have in mind is taking existing features like
the base of hallow trees and using them like the
niches of a chruch.
Found small "caves" in a stone wall that makes up a
train tressle in New Brunswick and thought it would be cool to
insert tiny Buddahs in them.

There's also a small mound of dirst under some trees visible from the side walk with
a fine stone on the side. Though it would produce a p[ositive effect to
move the stone to the top,
plant a rose bush at the base and put an image or arangement of
cinder blocks as if it were a japanese Garden Lantern.
Or perhaps something to hold bird seed to feed the local wild life?

Nothing one day then a shrine with the sun rise.

I'm looking for suggestions, assistance and especially encouragement.

Pedro of New Jersey.

    go for it!
that sounds really wonderful. i haven't done altars like youre talking about but i've left offerings in public places.
like a small birds egg with flower inside at the entrance to a wooded area.

i would love to see some pictures of your pieces when you've done some. ")

I agree with the other comments — this is a fabulous idea! What a nicer world we would have if everyone would do a few little, but loving, things of this nature! I like the way you think! :)

    Thanks for the +Positive+ responces.

The weather is warming up and planting time
    will soon be upon me.
A local friend expressed similar thumbs up statements and I'll be
    hitting him back about collaborating.

There are a lot of places that I made into shrines, and a lot of places in town that I know are sacred because of people who came before us. I am in the heart of the city, yet I am surrounded by sacred space. I selected some shirts that can pass as mundane to be my ritual garb. I have plenty of robes and I like going naked while doing magic, but that is not going to work in town.

Your best bet is to use found objects and decorate natural structures that are legally accessible to you. My favorite thing to do is to just leave a little bit of the food I am eating out at places like the altar in my backyard, the ancient ceremonial mounds remarkably preserved on the university campus nearby, or anywhere that birds happen to be looking for a handout.

One book that helped me a lot is "Urban Primative" by Kaldera and Schwartzstein. Chapters seven and eight are particularly topical. And my most favorite is chapter eight where they discuss fetishes as "junkyard magic". Their idea is to use what is available to do magic instead of looking for fancy ceremonial magic props like the chalice and athame.

So look for that book at your local library. It is a fun read.

Sounds to me like you know what you're doing pretty well.

    Peace

I knew I saw this book mentioned somewhere on tribe, but couldn't remember where.

I bought this book last year and it has made a profound difference in the way I see the city. Thanks, Mitch.
