Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Fri, April 15, 2005 - 11:49 AMHow much room do you have and what natural accessories do you have?
We just uncovered a circle of rocks in our backyard that will make a wonderful altar area... we are going to use a large flat rock for the alter.
Maybe some lounge chair cushions that will take sitting on the ground and the weather.
You could even go out and get a large piece of flagstone of any shape and a small outdoor table of some sort. -

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Sat, April 16, 2005 - 10:05 AMI love the flagstone idea! We have an out of control viney bush that I thought about training over a walkway - a spiritual entrance? What I would love to do is have a labyrinth - but just don't have the space. Our yard is small. -

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Sat, April 16, 2005 - 6:07 PMOk this may sound silly but if you have a small yard how about a miniture labyrinth? use some low ground cover.. even rosemary would work and just make your design and use crushed granite on the paths and while it is only ankle high it would make a very unique design for a small yard -

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Sun, April 17, 2005 - 9:34 AMI even thought about just drawing one on the small patio or on the driveway. I like the idea of crushed rock - I could even make my own patio stones with some of the lines... hmm

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Mon, April 18, 2005 - 5:19 PMhey!! cool ideas!! what about making a mosaic labyrinth for the actual altar? i love your thought about training the ivy around an entrance peice. you could also make some standing (stone? ceramic?) pillars for torches or glass candle holders. maybe even incorporating a gazing pool...a simple birdbath would do. ;) -

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Thu, April 21, 2005 - 11:46 AMHello. I am new to this group. My name is Linda. I like your backyard idea. I am also re-doing my back yard and I am trying to make a labyrinth out of river stones. Since your yard is a little smaller, maybe you could paint it on your flagstone. Here are some links you might like for designs:
www.labyrinthcompany.com
www.labyrinth-enterprises.com
I am also working on making some giant carved wood angels (called santos or retablos) for the 4 corners of my yard, one for each direction north, south, east and west. -

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Thu, April 21, 2005 - 12:55 PMahhhh! i'm getting so inspired!!! and i want to move soon so i can have a backyard!!! the place i'm currently inhabiting has a tiny spot under one window that we dedicated to the fairy realm. i took some interesting peices of driftwood and old gnarly tree trunks and painted tops for them that look like mushroom caps. (supposed to serve as fairy huts) we planted some great plants, and scattered shiny objects, shards of mirror, crystals, shells and what-not...glitter. it's so much fun...and very child-like and whimsical. -

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Mon, May 2, 2005 - 7:45 PMTake a look at 2 very simple ideas from a member of my ALTAR tribe (portland.tribe.net/tribe/b7...916813f89 Allan O. It really shows what one can do with very little urban space, or if it's litterely just a small patch of grass. Allans ideas here are not extreamly colorful or loud. They are unassuming and Zen looking, but you get the general idea:

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Fri, May 6, 2005 - 3:32 PMSimple earth altars are nice. Collecting things like driftwood, rocks, lichens, animal parts, and arranging them nicely in a corner, then surrounding them with potted plants, crystals, seashells, and putting a deity of your choice in front would be great. -

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Fri, June 3, 2005 - 1:33 AMI love to imagine that every surface is an altar! It can alter your perception to imagine that *everything* is a surface. For example, being Lakota, I really resonate with Native American culture...I love to string prayer pouches made with tiny bundles of tobacco, corn meal and sage wrapped in fabric- they are strung on a tree. I once saw the coolest tipi made simply with one main pole in the center, and strings coming down to form the tent part. Scarlet runner beans were planted by the strings, and the tendrils were trained to climb up them. These beans grow fast, so in 1 month they had a fully blooming yard tipi! Along those same lines: medicine wheels, dream shields in sticks in the ground, prayer flags, xmas lights, a chimanayo, fountain, gardenia flowers, night blooming jasmine, statues and fairies hidden, wind chimes, arches to separate spaces, small window boxes of kitchen herbs growing. The possibilities are endless!! I always decorate altars using my favorite philosophy of 5 senses. Attempt to focus your altar to honor all the ways we appreciate expression; taste, smell, touch, sound, sight.

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Sat, November 12, 2005 - 1:47 PMi have a very simple outside altar. i use a big round piece from a pecan tree that fell in our backyard as the main altar space. it changes continuously thru the year, with different things growing on or around it all the time. it sets underneath an oak tree. i have a small metal statue representing the Goddess, in flight (running or dancing) which fits since i would always rather be running thru the woods naked! lol
and i have a stone Greenman face that my hubby bought me propped up under the oak tree.
everything else, earth, air, water, surrounds it naturally. i will put fresh flowers on it, offerings of wine, food, etc. for offerings. its one of my favorite altars -

Hatian Inspiration
Fri, December 16, 2005 - 3:58 PMSome years ago (maybe even a decade) the University Art Museum in Berkeley did an exhibit on Hatian "voodoo" alters. My mother went and she picked up an idea of putting bottles of colored water (she uses food dye) in her yard. It's actually kind of neat.

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Tue, June 20, 2006 - 12:14 AMUse ribbons to hang small votive candle holders from tree branches, making sure you hang them lower than any leaves or branches that could get too hot! Blessed Be! -

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Thu, March 1, 2007 - 2:25 PMI also just joined this tribe!
If you love butterflies or hummingbirds you can create a garden that will attract them into your yard. There are books you can get on this.
Sundials are also very neat and so are water fountains (there are solar powered ones that are really cool but $$$ on the internet you can buy).
Where do you feel the most "at peace" in your yard? This can be one of your focal points.
I like earthy colors and natural things the most for yards as well, but everyone is different.
Try and keep it simple though. Too much is too much!
Another tip: the sun can hit certain stones during the day and light them up or make them sparkle! -

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Sun, June 3, 2007 - 11:59 AMI am definately trying to do this now. I purchased a ton of seeds for companion planting but also to draw the right kinda of insects too and away from my garden. I know as well, this will bring hummingbirds and hummingbird moths (which I'd never seen until this year all over the grapefruit tree). I'm so excited to be more interactive with the garden.
Almost makes up for the abismal heat that is to come. -

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Mon, June 4, 2007 - 4:28 PMi would start with a geomagnetic analysis, move through a feng shui analysis, and then think about
what i want to have the altar do for my consciousness, what kinds of mental exercises do i plan
to have the altar facilitate?

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Fri, March 16, 2007 - 9:30 AMI just finished placing four different altars at the corners of my property.
I started in the East with a mirror and steel installation so you could see yourself in a few different ways, then moved South and made a giant obelisk made from concrete and found stones. There are some pictures of it on my profile - it is the big red thing with an eye :) It is my sentinel to the outside world, it sees everyone coming to my home.
Next I went west with a poseidon statue made by a local artist to watch over Temple Creek in a ferny meditation zone. This last Yule I flattened an area at the base of 7 entertwined beech trees and made a place to do yoga.
Find special spots and honor what they have to offer you!
Unfortunately my land is too rocky and steep for a labyrinth - I would like to experience one. Does anyone have one in the SE? -

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Sun, April 8, 2007 - 12:41 AMAny one got any ideas on how someone with a good sized yard in a desert area that's still wild with very little water could control or maybe I should say bring life to her land. (I've very little money mind you. New home owner, but want to please and thank the goddess for her great blessings) -
-
Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Mon, April 9, 2007 - 12:35 PMCheck with local garden shops and gardening societies to find out what is native (and therefore, needs little water) to your desert home. I am sure the goddess would be very pleased with a space that fosters native flora and fauna rather than one that looks like it should be in England or something. And you have all manner of options for decoration... even if you choose to incorporate, say, things that homour the native people of the land you now live on, don't forget to include things from your own background, to make the space really personal.

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Sun, June 17, 2007 - 12:20 AMI wonder how I could create a water spot in our semi-desert mountain space that wouldn't be so much an attraction for the feral cats but bring in the bug eaters and water loving pollen buggies.

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Thu, February 5, 2009 - 3:58 PMRandom ideas:
*Dig down, build up.
*Sculpt a tree. Altering it slowly over time. google: tree sculpture
*Collect anything pretty, with enough it has power.
*Perhaps one very simple with strong stones, but another with whatever magic objects you find.
Shrines/sculptures/alters we have:
*hanging colorful ones on a trail.
*Many wooden sculptures.
*27 foot tall totem with 35 carved faces.
*Cosmic Goddess shrine.
*earth temple. Secret place down int the earth with big rocks.
Shrines we am making:
*Shrine to the outmoded comode. (Make of old toilets with plants in them. )
*Santa Muerte Shine. Not because we revere her, but because I have a cool sculpture.
*Science shrine

Re: anyone have backyard altar ideas?
Tue, February 24, 2009 - 11:32 AMI just moved in here and am starting with a blank slate.
Ordered caladiums and am building a bed around the bird bath. And have started on a bottle tree. Not much else yet. Just lots of compost!
Will see what comes my way.
